About

Russell Barratt (b.1978, Bangor, Wales) is a self taught textile artist and quilter working solely with secondhand clothes and fabrics. His work is often inspired by memories and domestic life. Through Russell's innovative approach to textile art, coupled with his expertise in transforming everyday materials into compelling artwork, he seeks to highlight the significance of sustainable making, recycling and storytelling. Since 2021, Russell has taught online classes, given talks and in person workshops across Britain, sharing inspirations behind his work and encouraging makers to work more sustainably.  Russell was the 1st prize winner of the Festival of Quilts Sustainable Quilts Category in 2023 and has work in the permanent collection of The Quilters’ Guild of The British Isles. His work has been featured in various quilting magazines across Europe.

With a background in garment making, Russell has put his upcycle skills to work on many projects over the years before focusing on quilts, including costumes for stage and screen (Matthew Herbert, Charlie XCX, ESKA, Little Mix), collaborations with fashion designers, art exhibitions and bespoke items for photo shoots ( The V&A Museum London, The Clothes Show Live, Channel 4/ T4).

Born in Wales, raised in Scotland, Russell is currently based in Newham, East London.
